Students at Vista High School are getting a jumpstart on their careers through a unique dual enrollment opportunity at Compton College, earning free college credits while gaining hands-on experience in high-demand industries – welding and machining.
This marks the first year Vista High School – a 2024 Model Continuation School – has partnered with Compton College, offering at-promise students the opportunity to take the Introduction to Welding and Machine Tool Technology courses.
While the program provides an alternative pathway for those who may not follow a traditional college route, it is also designed to inspire Vista students to explore higher education.
“We offer these opportunities because we know the traditional academic pathway isn’t the right fit for every student,” Principal Ramon Enriquez said. “By tapping into their skills, they develop self-esteem and motivation, and that often leads to higher education. It keeps them engaged in school and it keeps them coming to school.”
As part of the program, Vista students are transported to Compton College after school, where they take courses alongside currently enrolled college students, gaining real-world technical skills in a hands-on environment.
The welding program equips students with skills for employment in the field and the machining course prepares students for careers in tool shops and machine rooms where they work with industrial equipment.
“One thing I like about this class is that we go straight into hands-on work, learning about the machines and how they function,” said Vista student Jandel Alanis, who enrolled in the welding course to gain experience for a future career.
To ensure all students are exposed to potential careers, Vista also offers hands-on workshops on-site, including barbering and entrepreneurship, as well as field trips to colleges and businesses specializing in high-paying, in-demand skilled trades.
Vista High School hopes to expand welding course offerings next year in partnership with Compton College, continuing its commitment to providing students with valuable career and educational opportunities. This effort aligns with Lynwood Unified’s dedication to Unlock Brilliance, ensuring all students have access to experiences that spark new interests and open doors to future success.
“Our goal is to empower students with the skills and experiences they need to thrive in their future careers,” Superintendent Gudiel R. Crosthwaite, Ph.D. said. “By providing access to career training and college coursework, we are giving them the tools to build a strong foundation for success, whether they choose to enter the workforce or continue their education.”
