Lynwood Unified celebrated over 300 African American students for their academic achievements and cultural experiences during the eighth annual Rites of Passage event on June 5, honoring eighth-grade students preparing to enter high school and graduating seniors journeying toward college, career and beyond.
District administrators and dignitaries kicked off the event with a procession led by the sound of traditional African drums, followed by scholars, who joyfully presented themselves to their families, teachers and District staff.
Hosted by the District’s Equity, Access and Instructional Services Department in collaboration with the National College Resources Foundation (NCRF), Rites of Passage empowers students, who receive medals, certificates of recognition and other accolades for their dedication and accomplishments thus far.
Lynwood, Vista and Firebaugh high school students received the Shirley Ann Davis Memorial Scholarship, the Lynwood Spirit Award and the Superintendent’s Award. Additionally, several students were honored with the Hope Award Scholarship from the NCRF.
Lynwood Unified takes immense pride in celebrating the achievements and experiences of its African American students. The District remains committed to working with NCRF to ensure equitable access to higher education and opportunities for all students.
